General leopard gecko information

Leopard geckos have a scientific name of eublepharis macularius. Eublepharis comes from eu meaning true and blephar meaning eyelid. In English, this means leopard geckos belong to the family eublepharinae because they have eyelids. Macularius comes from macula which means spot/blemish which obviously describes the pattern of the leopard gecko.

The above picture illustrates the "blemish" pattern which

is normal in leopard geckos.

Leopard Gecko eyelid

The above picture demonstrates perfectly the

presence of the eyelid in leopard geckos.

In captivity leopard geckos can live for up to 20 years although there are exceptions. Their longevity makes them very much a long term pet which shouldn’t be bought on impulse as it will be with you a long time if cared for properly. Adult leopard geckos generally reach 6-10inches weigh anything from 55-90grams, although there is a lot of variation and you may get a very small gecko or a huge one. Their adult size depends on diet, temperatures and, most importantly, genetics. There is a strain called tremper giants in which it is unusual for the adult males to be anything less than 120g.
